Service Description:
|
A control and surveillance program that runs during the spring, summer and fall months.
- West Nile Virus (WNV) is a virus that is found in wild birds and carried by
mosquitoes
affects wild birds, mainly crows and Blue Jays, and can be transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito
there is no specific treatment and no vaccine for humans against the virus
The Health Department has a comprehensive program which includes using adult and larval mosquito surveillance to determine the health risk of WNV for residents and visitors of Halton Region.
Activities include:
- public education, which emphasizes the steps residents can take to protect themselves from exposure to mosquitoes and how they can reduce mosquito-breeding sites around the home
- monitoring & surveillance for the presence of the West Nile virus in mosquitoes
- monitoring for the presence of West Nile virus in humans by ensuring prompt reporting of all cases of the disease by working with local physicians and hospitals
- implementation of a larviciding program when necessary
- implementation of an adulticiding program if necessary
