Service Description: Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities (ACSD) program:
  • provides funding for children up to the age of 18 with a severe disability
  • assists parents in meeting the extraordinary costs which relate to their child's disability
  • financial assistance ranges from $25 to $470 per month depending on the extraordinary costs related to their child's disability and the family's gross annual income
  • a child is also eligible for a drug card and a dental card
  • Assistive Devices Program (ADP) may cover a portion of the cost of hearing aids and wheelchairs and their repair costs
  • with prior approval, ACSD may cover the balance of those costs

Expenses that may be covered include:
  • travel including kilometers and parking to doctors, hospitals * special shoes, clothing * parental relief * over the counter drug costs, laundry, recreational activities, camp, respite
  • financial assistance for basic dental care, drugs, eyeglasses, hearing aids

Special Services at Home Program (SSAH):
  • provides funding for children up to the age of 18 with a developmental or physical disability that can be used to purchase respite or support with personal growth and development
  • assists with financing for services not available elsewhere in the community
  • helps children with disabilities to develop basic life skills, and supports community activities
  • recognizes the added responsibilities of caring for a family member with a disability living at home and the need for respite for the primary caregiver
  • funding is limited in this program and allocations are made based on available resources on a yearly basis

Eligibility / Target Population: ACSD:
* child must be under the age of 18 years and have a severe disability which results in functional loss, extraordinary costs incurred by parents because of disability
* based on gross family income and size of family

SSAH:
* child must have a physical or developmental disability resulting in ongoing functional limitations
* to qualify, individuals must reside in Ontario and need help in daily activities and require more support than families can usually offer
