Service Description: Community outreach program that assists people with aphasia to engage and participate in conversation using supportive communication techniques * group sessions facilitated by speech-language pathologist, communicative disorders assistant and social worker * education and support for caregivers

A typical aphasia group session may include:
  • discussing current topics and expressing opinions
  • role-playing everyday communication scenarios to develop conversational skills of listening and reading comprehension
  • supporting one another to participate and gain confidence in communicating

Application: Referrals accepted by phone at 519-824-6000 ext 4357, or fax at 519-767-3442 by completing the Waterloo Wellington Regional Aphasia Program Referral Sheet available on website * self referrals and referrals from community partners (Ontario Health atHome Waterloo-Wellington, hospitals, Community Support Services (CSS) agencies)
Eligibility / Target Population: People who have aphasia as a result of stroke or brain injury * people who have completed or nearly completed their inpatient or outpatient course of therapy with a speech-language pathologist * people with aphasia that is likely to remain the same or improve * people who are able to participate in groups and maintain attention for longer periods of time
